Year 3 Lesson 1 Compose a Song

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of how music is constructed with notes and how this is represented in notation. They will also explore the difference in pitch between notes on the stave. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by creating a keyboard instrument and performing a familiar song.

Year 3 Lesson 2 Friction

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of the concept of friction and the difference between helpful and unhelpful friction. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by creating a ‘car’ and testing it on different surfaces to investigate how friction affects movement.

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of cause and effect of magnetic interactions. Students will work collaboratively to integrate and exhibit learning by building a ‘magnetic car’ in order to measure the effect magnets have on its movement.

Year 3 Lesson 4 Light and Shadow

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of how light and shadows
affect our everyday life. They will experiment with light brightness to understand how shadows are formed and consider how the human eye perceives light. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by creating a system to measure shadows created by different coloured lights and presenting their results.

Year 3 Lesson 5 Rocks and Wind

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of how both fossils and sedimentary rocks are formed, and explore the effect weather has on the landscape.  Students will integrate and exhibit learning by creating a system to simulate the speed and sound of the wind and the impact of the wind on a model rock formation.

Year 3 Lesson 6 Architect

During this lesson, students will investigate the key features of earthquake-proof structures. They will learn about how design and construction of buildings can minimise the damage that earthquakes can produce. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by designing, building and evaluating a earthquake-proof structure prototype and create an earthquake simulator system to test its effectiveness.

Year 3 Lesson 7 Seed Dispersal

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of seed dispersal as the movement or transport of seeds away from the parent plant​. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by ​designing a system that mimics the seed dispersion ability of the Eurasian red squirrel.

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of the relevance and importance of timing events. They will practice using time vocabulary and comparing the duration of events. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by creating an effective timer with an audio and visual alert.

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of algorithms, events, actions and the use of ‘If-Then’ to define the flow within a system. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by creating a ‘smart safe’ system that alerts the user when the safe has been opened.

Year 3 Lesson 10 Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of recycling, working collaboratively to estimate, measure and sort recyclable and non-recyclable objects. They will also explore how products are designed for a specific purpose. They will integrate and exhibit learning by building a ‘recycling machine’ that indicates when a target has been reached.

Year 3 Lesson 11 Plant Growth

This lesson requires two instructional sessions, 5–7 days apart. During the first session, students will gain understanding of the function of parts of a flowering plant, the stages of a plant’s life cycle and what plants need in order to grow. The second session will enable students to analyse their findings. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by identifying and recording perceptible changes in plant growth.

Year 3 Lesson 12 Food Chain

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of the importance of sunlight the food chain to provide energy for plants to grow and nutrition for animals. They will recognise the differences between how herbivores, carnivores and omnivores gain nutrition. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by creating a system to simulate how energy is transferred from plants to animals, starting with the Sun.

They will explore how a product has a purpose when it is designed and built, and the importance of considering the end user. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by designing a ‘night light’ that changes colour and creates a moving pattern.

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of the purpose of weather forecasting and design solutions for disseminating information about the weather and weather alerts. During this lesson, students will gain an understanding of how to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. They will integrate and exhibit learning by creating a system that indicates whether a number should be rounded up or down to the nearest 10.

Year 4 Lesson 4 Survival of the Fittest

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of how changes in the environment can have a negative impact on living things. They will also explore how animals coexist in the same habitat and how they can adapt in order to survive. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by creating a system that facilitates a game to simulate the competition between coexisting animals to gather food.

Year 4 Lesson 7 Morse Code

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of how sound is formed through vibration. They will also compare different ways of communicating, specifically how Morse code messages can be sent. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by programming a functioning Morse code transmission system to send messages.

Year 4 Lesson 8 The Sun's Energy

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of food chains and the roles within them, learning how energy originates from the Sun. They will explore what food webs are and how they consist of interconnected food chains. They will integrate and exhibit their learning by creating a system to represent the energy transfer between producers, consumers and decomposers in a single food chain.

Year 4 Lesson 9 Solar Power

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of common appliances that are powered by electricity. They will sort items depending on whether they are powered by a mains source of electricity or battery. They will also explore renewable ways of generating electricity. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by creating a ‘solar panel’, a ‘solar-powered fan’ and a ‘solar-powered car’.

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of six key periods in musical history and how instruments — string instruments in particular — are designed to control beat and pitch. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by programming a system to play music and adjust pitch using a simulated guitar.

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of skills which can be acquired by playing games and how games are designed. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by designing and creating an educational game to test knowledge of using apostrophes for possession or contraction.

In this lesson, students gain understanding of the name and function of the different parts of a flowering plant, and how it reproduces through pollination and the fertilisation process. They will integrate and exhibit learning by creating a system to simulate pollination.

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of air resistance. They will explore how the surface area of an object affects the amount of air resistance acting on it, and therefore the speed it travels. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by creating a system through which to test the effect of different-sized parachutes on the speed of a ‘car’.

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of the different stages of human life and will compare these to the life cycle of an oak tree, a butterfly and a frog. They will explore and discuss the changes that occur as humans grow and will integrate and exhibit learning by creating a system that represents movement at different stages of the human life cycle.

In this lesson, students gain understanding of how the rotation of the Earth on its axis causes night and day, and how its orbit in relation to the Sun causes seasons. They will integrate and exhibit learning by creating a system to represent the hours of daylight experienced in each season.

During this lesson, students will use their knowledge of prime numbers between 2 and 10 to determine if numbers up to 100 are prime or non-prime (composite). Students will integrate and exhibit learning by building a system which verifies if a number is prime or non-prime (composite).

Year 5 Lesson 8 Telegraph

During this lesson, students will extend their understanding of Morse code, by exploring mechanisms and forms in which messages can be transmitted. They will explore the design of a telegraph, integrating and exhibiting learning by creating a prototype telegraph system which outputs Morse code through light and sound.

Year 5 Lesson 9 Mixing Substances

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of the difference between soluble and insoluble substances and a mixture and a solution. They will also explore examples of reversible and irreversible changes and when new substances are formed. They will integrate and exhibit learning by creating a system that represents the combination of a substance and a liquid to form a solution.

Year 5 Lesson 10 Autonomous Driving

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of autonomous vehicles, analyse the advantages and disadvantages and explore the technology that power them. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by creating a system using a Light Sensor to control the movement and direction of a ‘car’.

Year 6 Lesson 1 Mars Rover

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of how vehicles are designed to suit their purpose, exploring the Mars rover as a case study. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by creating a ‘Mars rover’ prototype, identifying two possible solutions for its steering mechanism. They will compare and contrast the capabilities of each design and determine which one allows the ‘rover’ to better fulfil its main objective.

Year 6 Lesson 2 Electricity

In this lesson, students will gain understanding of how electricity flows around a simple series circuit. They will use circuit symbols to represent different electrical components and recognise whether a circuit will or will not work. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by comparing a SAM System connected via Bluetooth with an electric series circuit.

Year 6 Lesson 3 Theatre Design

During this lesson, students will gain of different types of theatre design; evaluating a variety of stage designs and a range of materials used in building construction. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by designing, constructing and evaluating their own theatre design, which they will use as the backdrop for a performance programmed on a SAM System.

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of how living things are grouped according to similarities and differences in their characteristics, and use a classification key to sort a range of animals. They will learn in greater depth about the Arachnida class, integrating and exhibiting learning by creating a system to simulate the defining characteristics and movement of a spider.

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of how light reflects off objects and enters the eye allowing objects to be seen. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by building and programming a ‘lighthouse’ to test how light is reflected.

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of number factors, factor pairs and prime factors. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by building a ‘factor pair machine’ that identifies factor pairs and products.

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of how living things are classified according to common characteristics. They will look in detail at the characteristics of the Reptilia class of animals, with a particular focus on the sea turtle. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by simulating how a sea turtle has adapted characteristics to survive in its habitat.

During this lesson, students will gain understanding of how the seasons affect the appearance of stars and constellations in the night sky. Students will explore how the night sky is represented in The Starry Night by Van Gogh; its technique and interpretations. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by creating a system to simulate Orion and how it changes appearance between summer and winter.

Students will integrate and exhibit learning by programming a system using AND logic blocks that require input of a specific passcode in order for the output to be activated.

Year 6 Lesson 10 Adaptation

During this lesson, students will learn how living things adapt to their environment by gene mutation. They will explore the structure and function of our DNA and learn about the key aspects of Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. Students will integrate and exhibit learning by constructing a DNA model and program a system to represent the adaptation of a lion through gene mutation.
